Panning and Zooming

We have some pretty simple and straightforward rules when it comes to shooting video with our phone, especially with respect to panning and zooming.

Panning is the side-to-side motion we make, sometimes following action, or moving the phone to create visual interest. Our rules on panning are simple: DON'T move very far, and DO move quite slowly. Simply moving a foot or so can create a very nice visual effect, so long as you have a predetermined start and end point. In the previous video, we start on the flowers and pan up to a statue in the distance, all the while moving only about a foot and in a very slow and deliberate manner. This gives the same effect as a boom on a camera set.

With regard to zooming, our rule is simple: Don't do it. There is a great allure to just push the 2X, or 5X, or 10X on our cameras (it must be there for a reason, right?). But that is the wrong thing to do, at least with regard to quality video. If there is something 10, 20 or 50 meters away, walk closer to that item or subject and get close to it. That's the best (and only) way to get a quality shot.

Sometimes, this isn't possible, say, on a sporting field. In that case, at least move up the sideline and get as close as possible. Then, and ONLY then, might you have to zoom, but then it's only as a last resort.

Fill the screen

Whenever possible, fill the frame of whatever you are shooting.

Stay close to your subject matter and "fill the frame" by staying close to the subject, especially if that involves instructions, say, mixing pesticides and water. Be very intentional and follow the action, filling the frame and getting as close as possible to the central action. Remember, people usually only have one chance to understand something being explained (even if they can rewind the video). So, fill the frame. But even in noninstructional situations, people enjoy a frame that is full of information or content. So fill the frame or screen with good stuff!
